We are Andy and Sarah Hassler, husband and wife, and we roast coffee at our home near the Broad Ripple area of Indianapolis.
An adequate local culture, among other things, keeps work within the reach of love.
Love is at the heart of what we do. After a decade of living in other places, it became clear to us that Indiana was still home and where we were meant to be. We love where we live, and we love being a part of the local culture here. We think Indianapolis is a special place, and we hope to contribute to its charm, as well as its burgeoning coffee culture.
We also love coffee. Carefully roasted coffee is a work of art. Slight changes in heat and airflow and timing in the roaster can make for very different results in the final cup. We are amazed by coffee and its mystery.
Coffee also builds community, in our experience. Modern life can be fragmenting, pulling us into a thousand different directions, but craft coffee does the opposite. It calls us to slow down, enjoy something special, and take in our surroundings and the people around us, all of which brings richness to life.
Our Roasting Style
We source our beans from experts who search the globe for the best specialty green coffee available and pay a fair price for it. We roast light to medium, with the intent to highlight the coffee’s natural origin flavor. In this way, we try to avoid more roasty or smoky flavors that can accompany darker roasting. Coffee is very versatile and everyone has their preferences, which is as it should be, but we personally like this approach because we feel it best showcases each unique coffee’s potential, as we strive for the most flavorful cup we can give.
Why Blue Mind?
The name Blue Mind comes from a song by singer/songwriter Alexi Murdoch. In it he sings about slowing down and getting lost for a while in the blue deep of reflection: Remember when you were only a child . . . start to see with your blue mind . . . don’t be afraid of what you find. For us, good coffee goes hand-in-hand with this feeling. It is a gift that offers a time to reflect and enjoy something special. It is counter-cultural to our fast-paced modern lifestyle that favors the quick and cheap over the deliberate and beautiful. It is not always easy to heed the call, but when we do the reward is always worth it.
